Uncle Kal’s Flat Track Racing Series First Race March 3, 2002

Sunday morning 3-3-02 was the first race in our new flat track series. We expected a relatively small turnout so the 32 entries spread across 4 classes was a pleasant surprise.

The underground staff had just finished installing a new power system with two 8D batteries and a 55 amp power supply  set at 12.8 volts. As the Western States scale races on this track were run on 11.5 volts on Lee Gilbert power supplies with no batteries we knew we would be fine on the lower voltage. The power was awesome, crisp and smooth.

Falcon/Plafit L.M.P. was first up and qualifying was fast with times in the 4.4-4.8 range were the norm until Greg G came up with a new Falcon motor that was just plain freaky. Greg broke a three  year old track record with an embarrassing 4.131 lap time. Roy Hood was second fastest with a 4.487. Phil Phillips was top Amateur with a 4.551 sec. Lap.The race was run as a combined Pro/Am event with rookie flat trackers Phil Phillips. John Emmons and Paul Abbey joining Roy, Steve and Jonathan Forsyth, and Greg G. in a round robin main. The cars all looked great as all the racers made an effort to have good looking rides.    Phil Phillips won concourse with an awesome Audi RSC.

After getting nerfed off in the first turn Greg came back and won the first heat by three. After that the race was for second.  Roy Hood stayed the closest as he battled with Jonathan and Steve Forsyth. Phil Phillips and John Emmons battled for the amateur win as Jonathan fell back with mechanical trouble and at the half it was Greg by three over Roy who had seven in hand over the horsepower starved Steve Forsyth.  In the end it was Greg G , Roy Hood, and Steve Forsyth on the Pro Podium in that order and Phil Phillips, John Emmons and Paul Abbey topping the Amateurs.

Pacific Northwest IMCA’s most popular class, Group 10 sports cars, not to be confused with USRA Group 10, drew 9 entries and was hands down the most enjoyable race of the day. The cars, with flexi chassis, Sportsman motors and Ultimate bodies was perfectly suited for the track and fast enough to be fun without being destructive.

Roy Hood TQed with a great 3.570 to establish a new track record.  Roy took off in the lead and battled with Greg G and Steve Forsyth in the first heat. Chris Radisich came in on red in the second heat after taking the first sit out.joined the battle. After all nine heats were run Greg G. won with Roy Hood second and Steve Forsyth and Chris Radisich ending on the same lap. Chris was awarded the last podium position by track position. Phil Phillips won the Amateur division over John Emmons and paul Abbey.  There may be a weekly race for this class on the roadcourse in the works at Uncle Kal’s.

GT-12 Was up first after the break and qualifying provided some drama as Roy Hood erased Greg Gs GT-12 track record of 3.441, set at the Western States with a great 3.329. Greg was up next and ran a string of 3.3s until just before the power went off Greg ran a 3.291   to reclaim the record and TQ. Phil Phillips topped the Bs with a great 3.797 time.Roy and Greg had a great battle going until Roy ran into trouble in the seventh and fell back. Greg won with Roy second, Chris Radisich third and followed by Amateur winner Phil “TB Player” Phillips, Casey Scott, Ventura’s Jason Stone, Steve Forsyth, John Emmons in his first 12 race and the demolished Jonathan Forsyth.

After a half hour break to let the batteries charge fully 1/24 Eurososport qualifying kicked off with Chris Radisich running an incredible 2.985. Greg G was next fastest with a 3.017 with Roy Hood next fastest. Roy, Greg, Chris, Alan Ohren and Winter Classic Euro champ Jonathan Forsyth battled untill Roy broke a magnet in the fifth. Jonathan dropped with mechanical ills in the sixth and Alan spun a gear to drop back as Chris and Greg continued to have a great race. Chris had to change tires in the last heat and Alan took over second. Steve Forsyth also got past Chris in the last heat to claim third. Radisich was fourth and Jason Stone fifth. Jonathan, the youngest racer ever to win a Eurosport race and veteran Roy Hood had to sit out the last two heats with broken rides.

Uncle Kal’s would like to thank everyone involved for making this race such a great success. Especially the turn marshals who worked so hard all day putting cars back on the track. The next race will be after the USRA Nats and the date will be announced soon.

Greg G.
